Final Fantasy XIII-2 is real, coming this year

At Square Enix's big press conference in Japan today the company announced a new addition to the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. Confirming recent rumours, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will, like its name suggests, be a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII and will be released this year.

Motomu Toriyama, director of XIII will be back at the helm. Yoshinori Kitase announced the game on stage, so chances are he'll be back in the producer's chair. Obviously there are very few details to go on at the moment, but at trailer was shown at the event in Japan which will hopefully make its way online at some point.

The trailer showed "Lightning in armour. She was engaged in a sword fight with a purple haired man", according to Andriasang's liveblog. Thankfully, XIII-2 is being developed for both PS3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously, so there should be no suffering of a bad port this time.
