In an interview with Edge, Square Enix Producer Yoshinori Kitase recognizes the trend in RPGs moving away from classic turn-based systems.
"I think the nature of the franchise is to present something new each time," Kitase told Edge. "In the global market we see many players moving away from games that used turn-based systems toward what you might term an action-RPG. That's a trend, and you ignore things like that at your peril."

Ten years ago today on November 15 2001, Microsoft set foot on unfamiliar turf as it entered the console market. The console launched alongside titles such as Project Gotham Racing, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, Dead or Alive 3 and Jet Set Radio, but it was Halo: Combat Evolved that really stood out as the game to mark the arrival of the green and black behemoth. Fittingly, the Halo franchise also celebrates its tenth birthday today.

Every Modern Warfare needs a "No Russian" moment. They might as well print it on the back of the box. A leaked video of Modern Warfare 3's crack at the idea has surfaced on Youtube, ahead of the game's release on 8th November.
In case you'd forgotten, "No Russian" popped the player into the shoes of an undercover agent obliged to participate in a terrorist airport attack in order to keep his cover. You were never forced to kill civilians, but the option was there.
The new Modern Warfare's equivalent is a little tamer. Keen to avoid spoilers? Stop reading now.
The sequence features a family of American tourists visiting London. It takes place from the viewpoint of the father, filming his wife and daughter in front of Big Ben. Seconds later a truck pulls up next to the family and explodes, killing all three and flooding the street with gas. According to CVG, the player is given no chance to intervene.
If you want to watch it, watch it sooner rather than later. Activision's likely to pull this soon.

Assassin's Creed movie "will never - and I mean never - get made"

Hollywood studio heads have expressed their astonishment and dismay at Ubisoft's handling of its Assassin's Creed movie deal with Sony, with one talent agency branding the project "a waste of ink, paper and time".
Ubisoft and Sony announced the Assassin's Creed movie deal in October. According to NYmag.com's Vulture column, Ubisoft has demanded and received an unheard-of level of control over the project, including the last word on its budget, principal cast, script and release date.
"The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin's Creed will never - and I mean never - get made," the agency added.
"As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal," noted another "incredulous insider". As it happens, Spielberg's Dreamworks was the first studio to pass up the Assassin's Creed movie during early bidding.
"They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie's development if they decide to," another studio chief revealed. "It's ridiculous."
"It's [Ubisoft's] billion-dollar brand, so I get that they're protective," chimed in another outraged outfit. "But they're not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it's a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do - and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do."
Another of Vulture's sources explains that Ubisoft's demands stem from a hefty contribution to the budget, with Sony itself stumping up "only a fraction of what a studio typically would spend to option or develop a script".
If this is common knowledge, it doesn't seem to have appeased the Hollywood old guard. "It begs the question," commented one studio bossman, "If they're so afraid of what will happen to their franchises, why make a movie at all?"
What would you do with an Assassin's Creed film? The next game in the series, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, is out on 15th November.

Michael's friend Carlo emailed Gearbox Software after his death to request that David Eddings, voice of comedy robot character Claptrap, record a eulogy. The Gearbox team haven't just acceded to his request - they've also opted to create a non-playable character based on Michael in the new Borderlands. Talk about fan service.
We don't have much to add to this, other than that we're moved and a little confused.
