Left 4 Dead 2 lag, how to fix it

Left 4 Dead 2 has reportedly suffered with lag problems since its launch.

So here's a temporary fix to addressing the problem until Valve hammers its netcode into shape.

The main tip is to avoid the dedicated servers and play on your own, locally hosted server. How to do it isn't as straightforward as it seems but still quite easy.

Select Play With Friends for the game mode you want to play (it's available in Campaign, Versus, Realism and Scavenge). Then press X to create your own lobby. Switch from the dedicated servers to local host, switch the permissions from friends-only to public and wait for the lobby to fill up. Then enjoy a lag free game. Ta-da!
